Day 136 - AALL & Create Asian Challenge.

This is my next AALL & Create entry. The theme was Asian.  My background is a collage of origami paper.  I used some iridescent pigment powers mixed with clear gel medium on the collage as well.   The paints were fluid acrylics. These are translucent so you can see the patterned paper through it. The black which was Dylusions Paint which is not translucent. The white in the eyes were also done with a paint that was not translucent. I used a small amount of distress ink to do some shading in the neck.

Below is a in progress picture of the background before I started the face.

I did this one with paper from the Stampin up Cupcakes & Carousels designer paper set as well as coordinating cardstock.  The stamps are from Unity.  The clothes were done with paper piecing.  The skin and flower are colored with copics.

Day 130 Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art - Mosaics

Yesterday I went to the Lizzardro Museum of Lapidary Art.  Today I will share some of the mosaics I saw. When you realize they were all done with pieces of stone, it is amazing.  In addition, the examples here don't even include some of the more detailed ones.

Even close up it is hard to see that these are stone pieces.

Day 129 Peace be unto you

It has been a day where I just needed some peace. Some calm. I put on my beach music. Get out the markers and do a bit of coloring.  This stamp is by Unity and I love it.  Something about this face calms me. I colored it with copics and shaded the image with Distress Ink,

Day 128 - Origami Crane

I make paper cranes quite often. I do them for restless children in church.  I do them as meditation. I just do them.  Below is a picture of mom with one.  She said her mom tried to teach her to do them as a child.  I showed her how to do it. She was happy to do it but said it would be the only one she would ever make.

Day 127 Mushrooms

I was at the cottages this last weekend. To me, mushrooms are like sunsets.  You have to be in the right place at the right time to see them.

I used a food setting on the camera on my phone.  It gave richer tones.  Here is one taken about he same time without the food setting.  I will want to use it more. I don't use photo shop on my photos. I don't have it.

Day 125 - Seeking inspiration

I made this today but I am not certain what I am going to do with it. The new theme for AALL & Create  challenge this week is Asia.  I am finding it hard to find my inspiration.  And questioning too. Why are Europe and Asia considered two continents.  AALL & Create  has have set guidelines that mix India and China which is hard for me.  And then what about the middle east...is that Asia or Europe.  Any thoughts out there.

Day 124 - The Adventure Awaits

Tonight I finish putting up this wall of pictures and art. I have been planning it for a while. My daughter- in-law helped hang the picture frames.  I asked for it to be asymmetrical.  It might be more asymmetrical than I am totally ready for but I like it.  Below are some close ups.

This shadow box has a sand dollar I found while in California.

Below - The black and white is from near Cave Falls near Yellowstone Park.  The fern is from New Zealand. The bird is Dominica and my husband with the grandsons is at the cottages.

Almost every photo was taken by me.  I didn't take a couple of them because they are of me!

Day 122 Vintage Memories

I have decided to participate in the AALL and Create Challenges.  The first was labeled Europe.
AALL & Create Challenge One  The piece had to contain some of these things but not all were required.

A face
Papers (newspaper, printed paper, rice paper…etc.)
Letters, numbers
Blue for the colour of the European Union, Union Jack...
Ribbon, twine, string or lace…
Textures – take inspiration from history from ancient civilisations to the fall of the Berlin Wall
Something both vintage and modern
  • I also wanted to enter ArtFest at my work so I will enter this there as well.  ArtFest runs at the same time as ArtPrize with is a major art competition in Grand Rapids, MI.
  • I started with doing collage with tissue paper with music on it and parts of old books. The books are very deteriorated and from our 115 year old family cottages. They were being tossed because of their condition. I used mat medium gel to collage.

  • Next I stenciled flowers with Fuild Acrylics by Golden and Deco

  • Next I stamped and embossed some images done with stamps by Dylusions. They are the Couture Collection.
  •  Next I painted some highlights on the images.  Blue on their hats and painted their skin.

  • Next I added some stickers and papers. There was even some metal pieces.

  • I decided I needed more blue flowers. I also used some Distress inks to shade. I sprayed it with some ink and added some gold powder.

  • At this point I looked at it and realized there is a face in the middle. Can you find it? I printed a picture of it and worked on the face.
  • Here is the finished piece with the face.

    Day 121 - outdoor crafting

This was my craft room at the cottages last week.  Hardest part was putting it away each night in case it rained.

And this was a shaker card my daughter in law did from a paper pumpkin kit.

Day 120 - more foil - and trying other things

So yesterday I was playing with a couple of these.  Heat embossing wasn't very successful this time. I will try again another time.  Here is the best it got

I decided to try using it with sticky embossing powder.   You ink with embossing ink, with sticky embossing powder  then you apply the foil while the embossing power is warm.
This was my first attempt.  The problem here was the textured paper and poor ink.

Here I tried it again. This time I used white craft ink instead of the embossing inks.  It took a lot and the face was kind of blurred. Kind of double inked.

Why all the work and not just emboss the image?  I embossed this but accidentally picked up the clear powder instead of the white.   It wasn't really a great image. I wanted to use it so I went over it with the dauber and some crushed curry.  The clear embossing powder worked as resist.  I was happy with the end results.

This was probably the best of the experiments.

Day 119 - Hot foiling- Fail

One of the things I love about the Craft Outlet is it gives me the opportunity to try new things inexpensively.  This week I got a couple of these...

Here you can see it closer.

    And a couple of these.

So of course I don't have a TODO machine.  I had to figure out something myself.  I started trying it in my cuttlebug, just to see what it would do. It tore the paper when used to emboss.

Then I tried my laminating machine.  I layered the metal piece, foil, cardstock and wrapped in a folded piece of printer paper. My daughter helped. She was here visiting. It took many many runs through the laminating machine.  I did have a slight success. You can see the image slightly. You can see the foil on the edges though. Kind of smeared.  The foil was pink.

Here was the next attempt. I heat it up on the stove and then ran though the laminator.

It really didn't help but I might try again. Instead, we decided to use it like a stamp and try some sticky embossing powder.  Come back tomorrow to see the results.
